About us

Môn Active is a family-owned business based on Anglesey in North Wales. We were incorporated in 2013 with a vision of delivering high-quality outdoor activity and first aid training courses. We are constantly striving to improve our services, and employ only highly-qualified and experienced staff to ensure all of our activities are safe, delivered to the highest standards and most of all, fun.

We are ideally situated to access the abundance of activities and world-class venues that exist for outdoor activities on Anglesey, in Snowdonia and in North Wales as a whole. We use high quality venues and equipment, and strive to work with low ratios of instructors to participants to ensure that everyone gets that personal touch.

Rich sea kayaking in the Menai Strait

Richard Griffiths Hughes

Rich is one of Môn Active’s directors, and the person you’re most likely to see if you book onto one of our courses or activities. He’s been working in the outdoor industry for over 15 years and holds some of the UK’s highest awards for coaching and leading within mountaineering and paddlesports, including the Advanced Sea Kayak Leader (5*). He is also a provider of a number of British Canoeing coaching, leading and performance awards, and is an active paddler, kayaking in Anglesey’s amazing waters, taking part regularly in races, time trials and the like when not working.

He’s also a keen mountaineer and climber, and has recently been introducing his two young daughters to climbing both indoors and outdoors. He holds the Rock Climbing Instructor and Summer and Winter Mountain Leader qualifications. He is also active in a number of other activities including mine exploration, caving and cycling.

Rich is sponsored by Rockpool Kayaks and Celtic Paddles. Rockpool Kayaks, based on Anglesey, design and build innovative high performance sea kayaks using the best techniques and materials. Rich uses the G.T. for the bulk of his sea kayaking, and the Taran for longer expeditions, time trials, training and performance kayaking. Both models of kayak as well as the whole of the Rockpool fleet are available to demo on any of our sea kayaking courses, just get in touch beforehand to arrange it. Celtic Paddles are also based on Anglesey, and produce strong, lightweight paddles that are the choice of some of the worlds’ top professional paddlers. Rich uses the Pro Sea Touring Paddle for day-to-day paddling, as well as a full-carbon XTi paddle for white water and surf.

Rich is also able to provide technical advice and staff training within paddlesport and does for a number of North-Wales based companies including BActive@Rhoscolyn and the Arete Centre to name a few. This includes ensuring that they adhere to industry guidelines on equipment maintenance, having adequate policies and procedures in place and that activities are run safely.
